Sandy Alcantara pitched seven strong innings against the franchise that signed him out of the Dominican Republic at age 17 as the host Miami Marlins defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 on Wednesday night. Alcantara (7-11) allowed five hits, one walk and two runs (one earned) while registering a season-high nine strikeouts. Marlins rookie shortstop Maximo Acosta -- who had been hitless in his first eight MLB at-bats -- broke that streak with a 418-foot homer to center in the sixth.

Following an electric walk-off win on Monday, the Dodgers wasted little time getting after their NL West opponents, scoring two runs in the first inning, two more in the second and three in the third, getting out to a comfortable 7-0 lead. Austin Gomber was the starting pitcher on Tuesday, and it's safe to say he didn't have his best stuff.

Josh Bell homered and drove in two runs, rookie reliever Cole Henry pitched out of a jam in the sixth inning and the Washington Nationals held on to beat the Mets 5-4 on Wednesday night, ending New York's three-game winning streak. Bell's 16th homer was a 420-foot line drive to the right-field stands in the fifth against the struggling Kodai Senga (7-5), who allowed five funs (four earned) in five-plus innings. New York's Brett Baty hit his 15th homer, a 455-foot rocket in the fifth.

The Mariners lost Game 3 of the series 11-2 on Wednesday. Seattle had to go deep into the bullpen throughout the series. Game 1 starter Logan Gilbert went two innings, Game 2 starter Bryce Milller went through five innings and the M's' starter for Game 3, Luis Castillo, threw just four innings.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Minnesota Twins still hadn't announced who would be pitching for them a day later in their series finale against the Athletics, but they had made their pitching plans clear for Triple-A St. Paul, where Saints fans will be treated to a double dose of rehabbing major leaguers Thursday. Pablo Lopez will make his long-awaited first rehab start for the Saints on Thursday and will be followed to the mound by Simeon Woods Richardson, who will make his second rehab appearance. The plan for Lopez, who has been out since suffering a Grade 2 teres major strain on June 3, is to throw three innings or 45 pitches, whichever comes first, head athletic trainer Nick Paparesta said.
